Welcome to English 121-122: Enhanced English Composition
English 121-122 is a year -long composition course that integrates language instruction with composition instruction as a way of preparing you to be successful academic writers across the curriculum. Our goal is to help you achieve the CEFR level of B2 by April 2014 (please see page 17 of your Student Handbook for further information about CEFR levels).
During the Fall semester, in ENGH 121, we will focus on critical reading skills, which involve annotating and summarizing academic texts and which will serve as the foundation for academic writing in the ACCESS program and beyond as well as fundamental language skills that will help you write clear, well-formed effective sentences with accuracy near that of students who grow up in the U.S. using American English as their primary language. Language skills we will focus on in the Fall are identification of word and sentence parts, vocabulary & spelling development and the correct use of punctuation. The Spring semester will more closely resemble a traditional ENGH 101 course (Freshmen Composition), giving you intensive practice in drafting, revising and editing essays in a variety of academic genres and for specific audiences and purposes. Language skills in the Spring will start with a continued focus on accuracy but will shift to a focus on improving fluency by the end of the term; in other words, the language skills you develop in the Fall term will be closely tied to and applied in the revising and editing stages of the writing we do in the Spring term. |
